There are some places that become part of your story without you realizing it at the time. For Roslyn and Tristan, the Arnold Arboretum in Boston is one of those places.
Long before they were planning a family of their own, they met here. Both originally growing up in South Africa, Roslyn and Tristan found each other in Boston while building careers in biotechnology and creating a life far from where they grew up. Years later, they returned to the Arnold Arboretum for their maternity session as they prepare to welcome their first baby, a little girl.
It felt like the perfect place to document this next chapter!
There was something especially beautiful about photographing Roslyn and Tristan in a place that already held so much meaning for them. Rather than simply choosing a pretty Boston location for their maternity photos, the Arnold Arboretum was woven into their story from the very beginning.
As we walked through the Arboretum, we photographed the quiet moments between them — the way Tristan looked at Roslyn, the anticipation of meeting their daughter, and the excitement of becoming parents for the first time.
For Roslyn, this season also carries an especially meaningful connection to her family. Her late father had always hoped that she would one day have children, making the anticipation of welcoming their daughter feel even more significant.
There was so much love surrounding this little girl before she has even arrived.
The Arnold Arboretum is one of my favorite types of locations for an outdoor maternity session because it gives us so much variety while still feeling peaceful and natural. The winding paths, towering trees, open spaces, and beautiful seasonal scenery create a timeless backdrop without taking attention away from the connection between two people.
For this session, I wanted the photographs to feel effortless and connected – less about perfectly posed portraits and more about documenting what this season actually felt like for Roslyn and Tristan.
There is something so special about photographing a couple who is about to become a family of three. The anticipation is tangible. You can feel that they are standing right at the edge of a completely new chapter.
Soon, the paths of the Arnold Arboretum will look a little different to Roslyn and Tristan. The next time they visit, they won’t be coming here as a couple who met and fell in love. They’ll be coming as a family of three.
I can’t think of a more beautiful way to celebrate their first baby than by returning to the place where their own story began.
I am so excited for these two to meet their daughter and to see their family grow. What an incredible story she already gets to be a part of.
If you’re expecting a baby and looking for an outdoor maternity session in Boston, I’d love to help you choose a location that feels personal to your own story. Whether it’s the Arnold Arboretum, another favorite Boston location, or somewhere closer to home, your maternity session should feel like you.
